Where to find a Zebra in Uganda

Where to find a Zebra in UgandaWhere in Uganda do we find a Zebra?

A Zebra is a single-hoofed animal that belongs to the horse family.

Africa hosts several equid species, most notably the Plains Zebra (also known as Burchell’s Zebra), the most widespread on the continent.

Zebras are black in colour with white stripes. The stripes come in different patterns, unique to each individual.

Foals easily identify their mothers with these unique patterns.

The Females have a Gestation period of 12 to 13 months

They are herbivores, eating a variety of grasses and shrubs, herbs, leaves, and bark.

When they aren’t eating, zebras typically sleep while standing. However, they do so only within large herds, so that others can alert them to potential danger.

Just like horses, people call male zebras stallions and females mares.

Zebras have relatively weak backbones and cannot support heavy weight, and humans cannot ride them. Despite this physical limitation, they can reach impressive speeds of up to 65 km/h.

Zebras have a lifespan of up to 25 years, depending on the conditions in their natural habitat.

A fully grown zebra can weigh up to 400 kg; however, predators such as leopards, lions, wild dogs, hyenas, and crocodiles regularly hunt them.

The common zebra species are

  • Plains Zebras
  • Mountain Zebras
  • Grevy’s Zebras

In Uganda, you can find the plains zebra primarily in Lake Mburo National Park and Kidepo Valley National Park. While these are the only two national parks that host them, small populations also inhabit the Pian Upe and Katonga Wildlife Reserves.
